Bootleggers has liquor license suspended [Updated]

January 14, 2010

Bootleggers In Milwaukee recently got their liquor license suspended for some hilarious violations

The council also ordered a 30-day liquor license suspension for Bootleggers and shut down the night spot’s rooftop bar in the 1000 block of N. Old World 3rd St.

Neighbors had complained of drunken and unruly patrons publicly vomiting and urinating. One neighbor said patrons crossed over to his roof and bathed nude in his Jacuzzi without permission. Another said patrons threw bottles and furniture from the rooftop bar onto her patio.

Bootleggers attorney Brian Randall urged the council to impose a shorter suspension and order restrictions on the bar instead of closing it. Randall also claimed most of the complaints came from people linked to the tavern’s competitors. But aldermen rejected that claim because Randall didn’t raise the issue with witnesses at a Licenses Committee hearing.

All indications are Bootleggers is in the appeal phase and are still serving at the time being. I’m 50/50 on Bootleggers as a bar. I have had some great fun times there and there have been times when I’ve had a terrible time there. Most of the times when things sucked was when I ran into people I went to high school with or that time I had an epic hook-up attempt failure. But you’ll have to ask some of my friends about that (please don’t). The times that have been fun where when there weren’t that many people there and the environment was in my favor (Read: The Joe The Plumber event that was held there).

[UPDATE]: After speaking to some unnamed area bartenders from 3rd street in Milwaukee it seems as though Bootleggers will be closed indefinitely, if not forever. Since owner of the above mentioned Jacuzzi could pretty much sue the pants off of Bootleggers to the point where that person owns the place, certain provisions may be taken if Bootleggers were able to stay open.

Reports are that Bootleggers will lose its liquor license for up to a year. Which means they are completely shut down (yes I tried to get in to order some tots and Dr. Pepper). If they have the opportunity to re-open they’ll have to close their 3rd floor patio and allow less people into the 1st and 2nd floors.

Now I’m not against Bootleggers reopening even if I found a new great Milwaukee Bar on 3rd street tonight that smells like BBQ, however the odds of Bootleggers reopening are grim. The idea that they could close for a year and still be able to attract customers is absurd. If the bar sacrifices it’s patio and numbers to stay open it will struggle to stay alive. Summer nights on the 3rd story patio was a big part of why I went there

  1. I’ve never seen Bootleggers during the day. Who knew?

  2. The problem with Bootleggers and the false complaints “lie” with the owner of the adjacent buildings. Do you recognize the last name of Weissgerber? They will do anything to get this place shut down as they are taking away business from his bar. It pays to be brought up as a rich kids with ties to the city!!! There goes the days of may the best man win. To be so far up the city council’s !@#$ must feel really good!!!
